The world of interior design is constantly evolving, and the latest trends for 2024 are no exception. This year, we’re seeing an exciting fusion of minimalism mixed with artisan touches, natural materials and organic shapes, and tech integration that’s shaping both residential and community living spaces. At the upcoming ULI Fall Meetings in Las Vegas next month, the LRDC 55+ Council (Lifestyle Residential Development Council) will feature several amazing programs. One of those will focus on Interior Design. The title being: Housing Product/Interior Design/Amenity Trends which will dive deeper into how these trends are transforming 55+ active living and resort communities.
Let’s start by looking at some of the design trends influencing the industry for 2024:
- Maximalism and Soft Minimalism: These two seemingly opposite styles are coexisting harmoniously in today’s interiors. Maximalism leans into bold colors, rich textures, and layered designs, while soft minimalism embraces simplicity but with warmer, more approachable tones. Organic materials, like raw wood and stone, are increasingly popular for creating cozy, inviting spaces.
- Curves and Organic Shapes: Rigid, straight lines are giving way to softer, more natural forms. Curvilinear furniture and decor inspired by nature bring a sense of warmth, Biophilia and relaxation into spaces, making homes feel more comfortable and inviting.
- Sculptural Lighting: No longer just functional, lighting is now a focal point in design. Sculptural fixtures are being used as statement pieces to add personality and flair to any room, reflecting a blend of art, form and function.
- Sustainability and Tech-Integrated Spaces: Smart home technologies are seamlessly woven into interior design, offering homeowners greater control over their environment. At the same time, eco-friendly materials and sustainable design practices are becoming mainstream, allowing spaces to be both stylish and environmentally conscious; all adding to the importance of good health and wellness.
In the context of senior living and active adult communities, these trends take on a unique flavor, catering to the specific needs and desires of this demographic. Here are a few key trends shaping these environments:
- Outdoor Living: Expanding outdoor spaces is becoming a top priority, with features like fire pits, covered patios, and grilling areas allowing active adults to enjoy outdoor socializing in comfort. These additions enhance the lifestyle appeal of senior and active adult communities.
- Multifunctional Spaces: Flexibility is key for today’s homeowners. Multifunctional rooms that can serve as offices, craft rooms, or guest bedrooms are highly desired, reflecting the importance of individuality and personal interpretation while designing homes with future needs in mind.
- Natural Materials and Open Floor Plans: Active adults favor open, welcoming layouts, particularly in kitchen and living areas. There’s also a strong preference for easy-maintenance materials like luxury vinyl plank flooring, which provides both style and practicality while fulfilling the desire to live a healthier and more active life.
The ULI 55+ Council panel, moderated by Tama Duffy Day (Principal at Gensler) features industry leaders Angela Harris (Chief Visionary Officer at TRIO), Hillary DeGroff (Principal and Studio Practice Leader-Senior Living at HKS, Inc.), and our very own Lita Dirks (CEO of Lita Dirks & Co.), and will explore these trends and more. Together, they’ll discuss how evolving population demographics and new technologies are shaping the future of active adult communities, answering crucial questions like:
- How are amenity offerings adapting to meet the needs of today’s aging population?
- What are the game-changing products driving the transformation of senior living?
- How does advancing technology intersect with interior design in these spaces?
This panel promises to deliver actionable insights and exciting ideas for anyone involved in designing or developing active adult communities. Lita looks forward to this opportunity to stay ahead of the curve and gain valuable perspectives from some of the most forward-thinking minds in the industry. She will be sharing the knowledge from the council with her team and the industry.
