First of all, I am not being overly dramatic when I say that my experience at the NAHB International Builders’ Show (known as IBS ‘in the biz’) was incredible. From the educational sessions, to the awards ceremonies, to the thousands of exhibitors, it was intense. Saying it was overwhelming would be an understatement. On the other hand, saying it was “a good trip” or “time well-spent” would also be completely underselling the experience. IBS was an all-encompassing induction into the home building industry. And, I loved it.

Experiencing Builder, Developer, Architect, and Interior Designer Collaboration

As a newcomer to the building industry, attending IBS was invaluable. The experience helped me to understand the industry as a whole. Moreover, it illustrated the role an interior design/merchandising company like Lita Dirks & Co. plays in it. I was able to see firsthand how builders, developers, architects, and interior designers interact. I saw partnerships and teamwork in action. Even walking through the halls, trying to fight my way through the crowds to the education sessions, was enlightening. The desire for collaboration and shared success was undeniable.

Granted, the economy is strong right now. And, the housing sector – always a prime indicator of the state of our economy – is healthy. All of which helps to buoy the atmosphere. However, the overwhelming feeling was a sense of partnerships-as-a-means-to-prosperity. It was as if everyone got the memo: we need to work together. That together, we can build and design communities that people want to live in.

Attending Education, Awards, and Networking Opportunities

Further, seeing the work that the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) puts into this conference is humbling. The coordination of the literally hundreds of educational sessions, of seemingly endless topics, to arranging a myriad of networking opportunities, and hosting just-for-fun events, was impressive.

We were involved with two different presentations. One on creative storage ideas (which ran twice). The other, on floor plans and finishes for different buyers. If you were unable to attend either of these sessions and would like copies of the presentations, please contact us.
